RADIANCE PLUGIN ECOTECT SOFTWARE

Honeybee connects Grasshopper3D to validated simulation engines, including EnergyPlus/OpenStudio (for building energy, HVAC sizing, thermal comfort, etc.) and Radiance (for daylighting and glare simulation).ĭragonfly enables the creation and manipulation of large-scale EnergyPlus and Radiance models by capitalizing on an abstracted 2D representation of building geometry, where all rooms are assumed to be extrusions of floor plates.īutterfly connects Grasshopper to the OpenFOAM engine, wich can be used to run advanced computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations.Īll questions about the software should be posted to our forum ( ). This includes diagrams like the sun path, wind rose, psychrometric chart, etc., as well as studies of geometry like radiation analysis, shadow studies, and view analysis. Wherever the sun is at the time.Ladybug allows you to visualize and analyze weather data in Grasshopper. I really appreciate the different sources of information though, and keep re-examining the results to make sure I can sleep at night. Grasshopper wise, these variations should be in the noise range. That way, if you are using modern dates, you can manipulate them as doubles using the standard Grasshopper components and then convert them back to JDays for calculations without problem. :^) When you convert a JDay into a double in Grasshopper it shifts the base reference year from something 4000+ bce to 2000 ce. Its just that when you start converting to and from doubles and second's of time difference start showing up, it irks.

That's one of the reasons I created an explicit Julian Day datatype in Grasshopper, although it's more important inside the code than at the top level. The NOAA implementations I have seen in Excel spreadsheets have this problem. Unfortunately double valued variables do not have enough digits precision to accurately represent Julian Day values in modern times. One cause of variation is the computation of Julian Day values, on which all the other calculations are based.

There are a number of computation steps involved, any re-implementation is likely to cause slight variations. Astronomers wanted to be able to take their calculations into the field with them. Its a fascinating book written to provide highly efficient algorithms for coding into the limited memory of programmable calculators of the day. My implementation is based upon Jean Meeus's "Astronomical Algorithms" from 1991 and referenced by a set of NOAA calculators as well. (And I just now spotted a couple of tooltip texts that I need to fix, dang) Please feel free to be in touch with questions as well. As I mentioned in a separate posting today, I've put a Heliotrope Release 1.0 at:  pending the validation queue at Food4Rhino.

RADIANCE PLUGIN ECOTECT UPDATE

Please do update to the current Heliotrope. Solar vectors shouldn't disagree by much, however, the article seems to be addressing differences in Daylighting Factor. I rely on Radiance as well and it's nice to have validation. In fact, from the screen shot it looks like a very early version)įascinating MIT article, thanks for posting that link. (Looks like you have an early version of Heliotrope by the way, and I can't verify those components right off. (I believe those differences are due to computational accuracy issues and I am still working out who's "right" and who's "wrong" there).

I checked the numbers generated by Heliotrope and the output elevation and azimuth are within a degree of the NOAA calculations I also reference against.
